First of many | Reborn Updates

So I know I’ve got at least five blog entries I’m overdue in posting, but I decided I just had to get this out. I’m into painted hair. I’m deep in the muck of painting hair. And I’ve just about chewed through EVERY online tutorial, youtube video there is on honing my technique and I still have questions. I thought, the moment I got into this whole thing, that painted hair was something I was going to dig. And oh yes, I dig it. In that way that I’m entirely obsessed with the idea of mastering a perfect head of painted baby hair and also completely unable to do it yet, but growing evermore determined and obsessed despite my shortcomings.

Thing is, I love the look of an amazing head of painted hair. I mean, I LOOOOVE it. I have now amassed — likely — the largest library of painted hair babies ever. I mean, it’s enormous. I just save and pin and save and reference and pin some more. And most of it, I have no idea how to do yet. I mean, it looks simple in theory, and I do paint hair for a living. I mean, portrait art isn’t so difference. Except on a three dimensional skull, it sort of is. And the physical mediums. They have a learning curve. Finding the right colours to add dimension without ending up with salt & pepper on a newborn head. :p

Yes, I ended up with a salt & pepper head (for about 10 mins. I corrected). What did I expect really? I mean, I’m practically brand new to this whole reborning thing, right? And apparently painted hair has the same learning curve as rooted hair. Or worse. I’ve read it’s harder in some instances, to get it looking truly real. Which is why a lot of reborn artists only root. But that only makes me want it that much more.

I love that sparse look, don’t get me wrong either. I LOOOOOVE IT! But the stuff I’ve been ogling is exquisite and thick painted hair. And I wanted that. At least, I want that for Sam. I’m going to focus on him here, as I gave “Meg” painted sparse hair, which I do love (more on that momentarily) and “Cozy” is also a sparse newborn hair kit (& I really feel like my vision and reality have matched well on her) but Sam.

This is him. Right after I started painting him.

Yes, he’s lying on a serving plate. :p

I wanted to give him hair just like my nephew’s at birth. Reference pic #1.300263_252710084781405_1835918186_n

Yeah, I was nailing his milia. And not so much his hair. And okay, nephew’s hair wasn’tΒ  thick. But thick for me (cuz I gave birth to two baldies! Any hair is a lot of hair to me! LOL!) I wanted those thick lines, without having any idea really, how to achieve this.

Evolution of his head of hair. . .
249186_167229363451864_623961307_n
I also deemed since I already did a Sam and this was a whoops shipment, where I thought I was getting a Sera, I was entitled to really try and have a go at something a bit ambitious and learn on his head. Worst that happened was a scrapped kit. Best case scenario, I’d learn how to do some dream hair. (Hah!)944434_167229643451836_2105507930_nΒ  IMG_5086

And then I went about adding highlight prematurely. And with the wrong shade entirely and he had salt & peppah hair for few minutes. Blargh. IMG_6187

IMG_6183
Too bright, I know. That whole learning curve thing. When you use a combo of Mars Black (heavy on the black) and only the smallest amount of burnt umber, what the heck colour do you use to highlight? Without risking salt & peppered locks? Hmm.

Post fix. Thought I might stop here, but then. . . I started googling again.

I have done an insane amount of googling! And learning all about painting y’s. (Which is obv what I was trying to do, without actually doing or knowing what to do). And combi. Oh, combi.

I found this listing. OMG Babies By Isabelle.

Dream hair, yo!

I instantly had an epiphany that “Cozy” was going to have combi hair. For sure. But it was too late for Sam. Probably. I have likely overpainted the front hair line. I won’t know for sure, because tonight I brought in the Y’s. And last I checked, he now looks like this:

IMG_6902

And yes, I really really shudder to count up how long I’ve spent painting this head. An embarassingly long time, I’d say. I regularly go into the studio and come out two hours later with him. And if you counted brush strokes. Well, I think it’s well into the bazillions. It’s not for naught. I like the new direction. I know what not to do next time. And man oh man have I perfected the perfect paint consistency and brush stroke angles. He really has been a learning head. But I still want to salvage this guy. Maybe get his locks looking like this?

And if I do… ever master a painted head. And by master, I mean, ever get marginally close to these awesomely painted heads I’m so lusty over, I swear I’m divulging ALL my techniques to the interwebs so that no other reborn artist has to navigate this course blind.

Now for some more painted hair porn!

More combi hair I’m aspiring to!

Yeah, that last one was a birth story set of pictures of perfect newborn hair (and legit thick newborn hair). So perhaps Sam, if he is ever finished finished, will have a head of hair more like this baby. Gosh knows. But I AM moving in that general direction now. I think. Oh goodness, I don’t know.

Now to start stalking Babies By Isabelle’s FB page! LOL!

Oh gosh, and here’s Cozy currently.

I loooove her hair so far. PERFECT. I’ll be combi rooting pale blond (almost white) locks on her crown. It’ll go perfect with what I’ve got so far. Just trying to figure out whether I should bother doing any y’s with her. Faint ones, of course. Now, if there was a tutorial out there tackling this. . . ; )

So shoot. Lemme hear how you paint hair? Do you? How do you? What colour goes with Mars black without looking Salt & Pepper! What of the Y’s? And are you all lusty for combi too? πŸ˜€

Watching Wednesday

Watching this!

Gotta say, Anderson Cooper doesn’t do a very good job playing an unbiased host here. At all. I obv got into this business because of the artform being something so close to what I already do – custom portrait work. Despite that this is a physical medium, and my pop art is a digital one, the skills are all the same. Steady hand. Attention to detail. Creative flare.

And I can’t wait to dabble in sculpture in future. I already have three sculpts in mind. Haha! XD

Rooting has a learning curve | Rooting Kameko by Tasha Edenholm

Let me just say, rooting is my Everest. I’ve said it before, and I suspect I’ll be saying it for a long, long time to come (because I intend on mastering it & at this point, well, it’s downright disheartening).

I have just learned that all felting needles are not made equal. And I suspect the same goes for the rooting tools. I’m using one I got off ebay (that was selling kits at the time). I don’t know what it is. Probably a mushroom. The needle was a 36. But it had almost no barbs. It wasn’t forked, I know that.

Pre-rooting, I heard a lot of “You’ll break a lot of needles initially.”Β  But I didn’t. I felt awesome. Look at me, and I’m not even breaking any needles.Β  Well, that’s because 36 gauge suck! And my needle was so good it pierced my finger. Straight through. Could have threaded an earring in that suckah. And it was either no collecting hair (and thus I’d have to shove it under a stack of mohair & hope for the best) or too many hairs, & then pull out ALL the extra hairs. Rooting Carson was an adventure in tediousness and pain. Tedious because I just wasn’t catching hairs. And pain because I just started jousting with that felting needle and well, lost respect for the power of said needle. (Hello, finger earrings anyone?) I’m coming out here and admitting this because I loved his face. But in the end, I hated his hair. I actually think now my hair hatred has a lot more to do with my own perfectionism, that bloody needle, and potentially a little bit of the colour of the mohair I used. Because I’m now rooting with dark brown on ‘Kameko’ and I just loooove it! Of course, I could also owe this new found love affair to the needle.

The needle. . . honestly, that 36 sucked. Big time. I couldn’t catch hair. And I was doing it mostly blind. I didn’t break any needles, sure, but at what cost?Β  I started google researching felting needles. And on a whim ordered one up. 38! These have arrived FINALLY on Thursday. I actually have since ordered 42’s too, but the postal service appears to like to put me into rooting limbo, so I still am waiting on those! But the 38’s? OMFG! They caught maybe too much hair (at least for the first three sticks, then I varied my hair separating system). I was over the moon in looove with these needles! Like ready to rush onto here and pen this entire post, in love with these needles!

Because they worked. And I could see what I was doing. My rooting became so much more methodical. AND FAST. And suddenly I wasn’t missing, ending up with plugs and plucking plucking plucking. I was just rooting. And plucking occasionally.

Fast forward to Thursday night, and five quickly broken rooting needles, and I was again despairing. I was in the groove of rooting and went back to my 36’s thinking maybe now that I was ‘skilled’ at this stuff, I would have a different outcome. Yeah, nada. I put the rooting tool down and waited for my 42’s. And then hoped to god that I didn’t break all of those (hello, 42’s – infinitely smaller than 38’s! And I broke ones that were only 2 deviations apart, was I going to blow on these suckahs and have them snap on me?! NOooooo!)

Well, between penning this they showed up Friday. Huzzah! & I broke them out. And OMG!!! They have like 3 barbs, maybe 6. But they catch hair easily. And they ONLY root one hair per follicle. I’ve had more than 1 once! And, thus far, I’ve only broke one! ONE!!!!!! That means I still have 4 needles left (and yes, I went ahead and ordered more because I can’t run out again, and I have a feeling the postal service is going to hurt me for a while, until reborners start opening shops in Canada!) But OMG, I loooove this 42. I think also that my 36’s were cut too short and that could be why it wasn’t rooting half the time too, because both the 42’s and 38’s are longer. The 38’s were a bit longer than these 42’s, which also might be why they snapped more too! I dunno. I’m a novice. And, like I said, rooting has a learning curve! A big dang one at that!

But swoon! 42 needles! Anything that turns this from the nightmarish first experience into a pleasant one, is worthy of swooning over! “Kameko” has the most brilliant hair now. He’s got maybe 1/6th of his head rooted already and I just adore him. I love his face. But I love his hair even more! I moved away from rooting Aubrey because of the hair colour. I’ll return to her, of course, but I really wanted to try out the darker mohair.

IMG_1059

IMG_1100
Eyebrows! I briefly (only briefly) thought he suited bald. I was, of course, wrong!

IMG_1197
With the start of hair (at the end of Friday).

I can’t wait to post most recent pics of him when his hair line is even more filled in. But gosh, I should be reaching the summit of Everest any day with my 42’s (exaggeration, probably! But I’m swooning, yall!)

I only wish I’d gone to the effort of researching or reading forums thoroughly BEFORE! All rooting needles are truly not made equal. And I suspect the same goes for rooting tools. I can’t wait to invest in something a bit better! I have my eye on a few others. And one day, maybe, I’ll try my hand at a german forking tool too! LOL!

Nothing like ambitious goals, hey?

Update on Aubrey by Denise Pratt | reborning behind the scenes

So I’m FINALLY rooting “Aubrey” by Denise Pratt. & made significant headway mottling “Kameko”. Still haven’t started on “Cozy” but suffice it to say I’m leaving the best for last! Here’s some behind the scenes on “Aubrey”. . .

IMG_8855

What’s creepier than baking baby heads in ovens, you ask? Baking eyeless baby heads, of course! IMG_8857

My work station is looking really well used lately (ahem, horribly in need of a tidying). I remain astounded how quickly I developed my own styles. What I’ve adapted and modified and how much more I prefer to mix my own paints EVERY time I do another step. & how many times I’ve altered the process. If I’ve changed things up THIS much with only 3 nearly finished reborns, I shudder to imagine how different things will be in the near future.

But I def love the process. I love the mastery and craft behind it. And working in the physical mediums again truly feels like coming home. (And it really isn’t that dissimilar from my custom digital portraits – except less margin for error here! A challenge I quite embrace!)

IMG_9412

And she’s done. Sealed. And ready for her second eye. “Argh, matey! I’m a pirate reborn!” I love her colouring. She ended up with just barely chapped cheeks. No milia this time. And a beautiful nose bridge. I can’t wait to take a few pics of her face in natural light too!

As mentioned on my twitter, I didn’t love her lips. But I love the finished product. They’ll look amazing post glossing!

I did, however, LOOOOOOVE her hands. And I love them even more painted!!!

IMG_9414

I was able to work in so many layers of beautiful color on these babies. Can’t wait to take proper pics of these beauties.

And the rooting? Well, besides my finer gauge rooting needles still not having arrived, I’m spending more time plucking out extra hairs than I seem to be rooting. And I’m also playing around with improving my swirl. I was decently pleased with Carson’s finished head (for a first try). Also given how terrified of rooting I was. But already, things are going SOOOOO much better with “Aubrey”. I even gave her rooted brows. It’s likely hard to tell, in the pics, but they’re there. Another terrorizing skill I’m tackling.IMG_9534 IMG_9544 IMG_9545 IMG_9549

Rooting is still my Everest!

Once she has hair throughout the front of her face, I’ll get theΒ “Name the Reborn” Game started. I promise she’ll have both eyes for those pics too! Haha. XD
