Keeper Babies

So. . . I’ve officially moved from artist to collector. And already trying to ensure this whole collecting thing doesn’t get out of hand.Β  Kinda like my aunt, who I can blame for getting me into this whole dolly world to start with (she was a porcelain collector; her out of hand collection was in the hundreds!) She started me on the Ashton Drake newborns. I had every one that Yolanda Bello sculpted. And now my Meekly has them. So. . . I suppose becoming a collector was going to happen eventually. But it took some time for me to feel set.

This is my little guy.Β  My Nico.
my nico (2)

Since I started, I was on the lookout for sculpts that looked like my kiddos. I love portrait babies. I’ve wanted to have portrait babies. BUT I have never felt like I had the skills to reproduce them precisely. LOL! Mostly the hair. I still am not totally happy with my hair technique, esp considering they were both baldies with barely there hair. And I love the idea of rooting with their own hair (also meaning I have to wait until they actually both have haircuts. Being baldies, this process always happens loooooong after two! LOL!!) So anyway, needless to say, I do have a Linus Legler in my possession now. Who will be my Sneaky portrait baby. But still too scared to start on him. And I also have a Camille Timmerman Juniper Altenkirch who I plan to reborn as my Meekly portrait baby (unless another pops up that I fancy more to her likeness!) But these are ones I’ve planned for. AND not really collection babies, per se. Esp as I may never start them. HAH!

But Nico. . . This is a funny story. And how I ended up with him is pretty random (& cool). First time I saw him I thought he looked like my Sneaky (very similar to Linus, who was already sold out by the time I entered the reborn scene). I reborn the first one as an OOAK adoptable baby, and almost kept him. I even named him. I decided to sell him, because I couldn’t afford to hold onto my babies (hells, I still can’t! But that’s another story! ;)) And regretted it. But I told myself I could always reborn a second one later. And I did. A custom. I rooted her, and sent her home as a Katie. I LOVED her so much though that I think I took like a trillion pictures of her.

Fast forward, I’m on FB and scrolling through my feed and see a Nico for sale. I immediately wanted to buy her. And I never feel this way. I was like ‘Wow, she’s pretty! I could totally paint her a bit more and freshen her up. How much is she?’ Then I realized, reading the caption, DOH, it was KATIE! My 2nd Nico I was oggling. LOLforever. I guess that’s the sign that I did indeed do a good job on her. As I rarely, if ever, stay in love with my work. Read: I always end up seeing my flaws, a huge reason I also can’t hold onto my own work. (In fact, I already asked a few artists about custom painting the hair on my Linus! LOL!) I didn’t think twice about it.

Baby Katie, on her photoshoot day.

IMG_9765 IMG_9971

I bought her back! I thought, I could always fix anything wrong with her in person. Let’s say she was marked up. Or missing hair. But, her momma took amazing care of her!Β  She came home PERFECT!!! Literally! Didn’t keep me from taking her apart and doing a makeover anyway. Because my techniques have changed since I worked on her first and I wanted her mottle deepened. And I wanted to fix her hands. Esp her nails. These pics of him show his old hands. They’ve been a work in progress. But needless to say, after only a few days, I effectively had a very new Nico in my possession, who I absolutely would not be parting with. Behold, new Nico.

IMG_2618 IMG_2642 IMG_2684 IMG_2747

He was micro rooted, a fully rooted baby before. And well, pretty sure everyone knows by now. I hate hair. The maintenance esp. I just far prefer a combi head.Β  So despite my fear to paint his hair, I did it anyway. I removed his sealant, and pulled out everything I’d rooted until I got to the crown.Β  Then I trimmed the remaining hair super short. I knew the moment I had his hair trimmed and in that little thick tuft, it was the best decision I made. Because he looked incredible without any paint.Β  Then I painted him. Incidentally, the combi look isn’t one I’d ever have tried out. Because it’s thicker than I’d ever done. BUT it was perfect. And changed how I combi forever. I painted his hair using pale blond (beige and flesh tone strokes). Again, not how I might’ve done it, but what I was working with to match his blond mop. And the finished product was soooo cute I again took a trillion pics of him. I am sooooo happy with it. And although I don’t think my son looked anything like this when he was born (he was more strawberry blond at birth) I do loooove it immensely on this doll. And def something I may reproduce exactly on my Linus (depending on artists’ availability for painting his hair for me; too afraid I’ll focus only on the flaws if I paint Linus’ hair myself. Oh to be a perfectionist! :P)

Already I’ve had the best time showing him off. Took him on a trip to my MIL’s (her sister was visiting and looking to add to her doll collection too) and he totally freaked everyone out. Love it!!! πŸ˜€

Fun Quiz for Reborners! :D

What is your name? Shaylen Maxwell

What is your nursery name? Reborn, Sweet. And Custom Reborn, Reborn, Sweet on Etsy.com.
How long have you been making reborns? Since May 2013.
What is your favorite reborning activity? Painting hair, the photoshoot, and clothing shopping (pretty sure one of the best parts ever is being able to still shop in the newborn section! LOL!!!)
What is your least favorite reborning activity? I might’ve once said rooting, but now I kinda love it. So… box packing. I hate wrapping presents, I am the worst at it. LOL! And flesh layers. Yawn.
What is your highest sale to date? $1200, my Quinlynn Eagles on Ebay earlier this year.
What is your lowest sale to date? $99 (but he was a $100 off from a FB fan winner) and my second baby. LOL!

What 3 products can you not live without? Authentic reborn strawberry blush (blush, and creases), my portable convection oven (LOVE), and my Slumberland mohair collection.

What 3 products would you never buy again? Ruby red mohair (YICK), acrylic eyes, and 30-anything gauge needles.
What is your favorite reborn kit to date? Gus by Tina Kewy. This one is a long time coming because I have fallen in love with SO MANY of the sculpts out there, before and after the reborn process. But Gus is my first ordered to keep baby. I am insanely in love with the half torso. I have a full post I’m planning devoted to JUST how much I order this kind of sculpt. And as I will write later, If sculpters regularly released half torso babies, I’d order them all AND KEEP them all. They are incredible! My fave by far. But yup, I have officially – for sure never going to part with – started my collection with Gus! That being said, Fern by Toby Morgan and Nico by Gudrun Legler were also in my forever collection at one point! πŸ˜‰

Which kit did not turn out the way you hoped? Aubrey by Denise Pratt. Only one I’ve ever scrapped. NEVER ROOT EYEBROWS. EVER. LOL!

If you could master a new reborning skill, what would it be and why? The fine lanugo hairs on the side of the face. I’ve seen them on Melissa George babies and I am DYING to know how she achieves it. Hair or painted. And if I could just trim the comb/fan/liner brushes perfectly to achieve the most beautifully realistic hair strokes…

Introducing Elodie Arabella | Reborn Baby Girl *sold*

Elodie Arabella is #187 of 650 in the LE Ellis sculpt by the very talented Tina Kewy! She has been meticulously painted using Genesis Heat Set paints – custom mixed for a completely unique skin tone, complete with blue and yellow undertones, and over five layers of mottling for ultra realism. Her capillaries and blushing is blended well with tiny milia on her button nose.

Her skin has been sealed with matte varnish to keep her shine free permanently and dewy skin finish was used to create realistic, still soft to the touch, newborn skin texture. Shine was added to the corners of her eyes, lips and nostrils. Baby Elodie’s hair was micro painted one folicle at a time using two tones for dimension and textured to feel like real hair using thick medium & look alive premium thinner that adds gloss to each strand – the effect being an ultra realistic head of painted hair that will always look and feel perfect! She has also been magnetized for her headbows (she’s going home with two of them!) set perfectly to sit where her hair naturally collects (like the bow is actually IN her hair).

Elodie’s body is ball jointed, half torso baby, with a doe suede bum. She is extremely flexible, poseable, and super cuddly. Tina’s Gus and Ellis twins are my favourite sculpts as they are the most lifelike, for me, and are exceptional to pose with and dress up. She also fits perfectly in a car seat and will look so real toted around town with you. She has full limbs, and half a vinyl body, perfect for diapers!! Her limbs and head have been sealed and weighted. Her body is weighted in all the right places to give her an authentic newborn feel (perfect for cuddles). Limbs have been filled with glass beads and polyfil, with glass beads in a sealed sac in her torso and head (so nothing will leak). No sand is in her body so she can travel worldwide! HerΒ  eyelashes are all slumberland mohair (best of its kind).

Elodie comes with a birth certificate (customized! You can change her name to whatever you like & pick her birth details) and her signed certificate of authenticity by Tina Kewy.

One Year!

April 30th marks one full year since I set out on this reborning journey! So what better time than to reflect on the journey so far… with a list of sorts and reflections. I figured I’d answer some much posed questions via fans on my FB page. (Delay in posting this means I’m now at my 1 year selling anniversary on Etsy! In addition to over 1 year of reborning!)

Do you remember your first sculpt?

Yes!! I could never forget him! It was Sam by Marissa May. A baby I ultimately fully rooted – in an attempt to throw myself straight into the deep end of reborning (since I was soooo scared to root!) But, in actuality, I’d ordered five sculpts before starting on him – Sam and Meg May, Kameko Edenholm, Aubrey Pratt, AND the sculpt that launched my love affair Cozy Smith. I started ordering just her, and quickly ended up with my first five. It was all sort of accidental, in amassing all the start up materials, I kept forgetting something & having to add to my list. And in order to ship from BB, where I started out, it just made sense to buy sculpts. And they had a massive sale going on (back when I actually thought it mattered, cuz I’ve learned my lesson, shipping & duties always make their sculpts expensive! LOL!) Reborning Sam was magic. That first time I creased! Adding his milia. I remember going downstairs just to fawn over his head. Reborning has never lost the magic for me. Transforming plain vinyl — aiming for more and more realism with every subsequent sculpt — into a near living baby is incredible! And the constant innovation in the industry is what keeps me coming back, as excited for the next sculpt as I was the first.

Which brings me to the question I wanted to ask myself at this landmark. Just how many sculpts have I reborn?

I keep a # tally via my birth certificates, so this one is actually easy! I’m currently at baby 68 ahem, 76. Yes, it’s crazy. But also, I am soooo incredibly grateful for the steady stream of orders. I aim to do 3-4 sculpts a week (because I batch paint, more on that below) but it actually works out to about 3-4 every two weeks when I factor in photography, rooting, that sort of thing. It’s still ambitious. But every time I think I’m going to have some extra time to do a few Reborn, Sweet original babies, the custom orders pile back up. I manage to have at least two weeks of work ahead of me all year round. Which is incredible! Custom reborning is my favourite thing and I am so glad I decided to carry over my niche from pop art into reborning. I love it because I love to vary my orders, and pretty sure if I were making them all, they’d end up combi’d. This way I have to root and do baldies! (my least fave reborns! HAHA! And only because bald is boring & rooting is still Everest! LOL!) And I just love combi.

Where exactly would you say you get your ideas on what the baby’s look like?

Ah, I can’t take credit. It’s actually ANOTHER reason I LOVE custom orders. Because I end up with a really diverse portfolio of babies I’d not necessarily have even thought to make if I hadn’t been commissioned. I also swear I save myself some time knowing exactly who they’re going to be as I work, because with all my homeless babies, I always spend at least 2 weeks debating what hair or eyes I’m going to use (when applicable). And I think my techniques would take longer to develop, as I’d just reborn what I was most good at, and most comfortable doing. This way, I always have to up my game, whether I’m psychologically prepared or not.

IMG_3388 IMG_3391

Which brings me to what’s my fave reborn customizations?

This one is soooo obvious: COMBI!! I looove combi. Full combi, partial combi, barely there combi. It is my fave look. And it holds up so well. And I just hate, personally, having to comb hair to make it look perfect. To me it looks the most realistic and always looks and feels perfect, no styling required! πŸ˜€ And my fave sculpts are newborn sized. Although I’ve got a bit of a fondness toward 17 inch preemies currently, thanks to Pixie & Meredith Brown! LOL! And sleeping sculpts over open eyed, mainly because I think they look more realistic and versatile over time. And inserting eyes is sooo overrated! LOL!

Pencils or paint?

Hair painting, you mean? πŸ˜€Β  Both. I love the look of both. I’ve recently been studying tutorials on blending prismas to create even more hair colours & techiques to feather the pencil strokes to look more painted. Because I do feel pencils are limiting. And for a while I was doing half and half because I missed that feathered hair look. Now I totally think it depends on the head. And my pencil painting wouldn’t be half of where it is without having started using painting, and vice versa. My hair painting is so much better since I was able to hone my pencil drawing strands. Now, my hair painting? I’m totally in a place of feeling like it’s still no where near where I want it to be, and yet I can see that it clearly has improved a lot! LOL! I just have extremely high expectations for creating the most realistic head of painted hair. (Because I also love painted hair). And I still regularly indulge in painted hair porn in my spare time. I could fawn over Evon’s, Little Chicks, Isabelle’s, and Sam’s painted hair. It’s too exquisite! XD

Who’s my fave sculpter?

Ha. SO HARD! I still LOVE Gudrun Legler! I would probably rank her first. Followed by Laura Lee Eagles (she’s def almost in the lead!) and Bonnie Brown, Tina Kewy, Elisa Marx, and Marita Winters are all right behind them. I am ALWAYS ALWAYS on the lookout for a new sculpt to add to my must reborn list. And I have a ton. I have totally gotten the reborners obsession of needing to REBORN ALL TEH SCULPTS!! Karola Wegerich, Emily Jameson, Brit Klinger, Ulrike Gall, Rachel Maynard, Sandra White, Natalie Blick, Joanna K, Heike Kolpin! Oh man, I could go on and on and on. Yes, I can’t choose!!

Have a question I didn’t answer, comment & I’ll add it! πŸ˜€

Currently in my studio:

I am batch veining & blue undertoning my next 7 sculpts. Looks daunting, but actually only 3 more than usual. Yes, I prefer to batch vein. My veining always looks better and I stay on one to two colours and it’s real easy to play musical body parts in the oven. LOLOLOL! Lots of cute babies to be! Took me two days of work to get through them all (not realizing there are 8 not 7 in that pile! Boo, math!)
